Urban renewal

Article Abstract:

Doug Elkins' dance 'Center my Heart' is set to the Qawwali music of the modern Pakistani artist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Qawwali is the devotional music of the Sufis, who follow the anicenti Islamic mysticism. Elkins's identification with the spirit of this music is clear, but his new dance manages not to be folkloric. One reasons is that Elkins includes both sexes in this dance, in contrast to the all-male, Sufi tradition.
