Leslie Norton has produced a bio-bibliography of Leonide Massine's works and Hunting Hybrids, a study of three ballets he created in collaboration with the surrealist painter Salvador Dali. Her latest offering, Leonide Massine and the 20th Century Ballet, establishes Massine as a major force in twentieth-century ballet and reveals the issues that caused his decline and fall in America after World War II.

The author, a former professional ballet dancer, recalls her earliest negative reaction to Edgar Degas' portrayal of ballet class, changing to enthusiastic appreciation after her career ended. Juxtaposition of feminine beauty and dark masculine consciousness, the painter's sympathy with details of a dancer's life, and the role of emotion in his works are discussed.
