British dancer and actress Jessie Matthews was one of the most famous entertainers of the 1930s. In America, she was acclaimed for her Broadway performances, and films like "Evergreen" in 1935 and "It's Love Again" in 1936. Matthews began her career working with show business legends Noel Coward, Cole Porter, and Rodgers and Hart. While her personal life was fraught with bitter break-ups and scandalous affairs, she soared to fame in British musicals and dance reviews. At the age of 72 she starred in a one-woman show, "Miss Jessie Matthews in Concert". She died of cancer three years later in 1981.

The dancer Anatole Obukhov, born in St. Petersburg in 1896, left Russia in 1920, performed with many companies including Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, Anna Pavlova's company and the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. He He specialized in the old classical ballets, different from the new romanticism which Fokine had attempted. He also taught at New York's School of American Ballet. At first sight, he was a funny man but also marked by personal grace and delicacy.
