Recent works by contemporary choreographers are described including 'Paper Cuts' by Keely Garfield, 'Forbidden Zone' by Ben Munisteri, 'Wall' by Elizabeth Streb and 'Disco Project' by Neil Greenberg. Garfield's 'Paper Cuts' is about dance convention and dance effect and concerns the way dancing can unexpectedly change the meanings in the semantics of gesturing and music. Greenberg's 'Disco Project' is a complex work that is successful in creating a beautiful spectacle.

1995: a year of dancing dangerously

Article Abstract:

1995 was a year of lackluster ballet performances which raised concern about the future of ballet. While many classically choreographed works from San Francisco to London failed to inspire much interest, modern and post modern dances did very well. One happy trend in the year was the presence of more mature dancers like Mikhail Baryshnikov and Altynai Asylmuratova. In order to save ballet from further stagnation, more creativity should be encouraged in classical dance.

Accidental pleasures: Edwin Denby's dance writing

Article Abstract:

The dance criticism of Edwin Denby lasted from 1949 to the late 1960s and made him one of the seminal figures in this field. His work began when classical ballet was influenced by pupils and opponents of Sergey Diaghilev and continued through the most creative years of George Balanchine.
