Article Abstract:
A study aims to analyze the secular traditions in Indian dance, with particular reference to Hindu fundamentalism, the Babri Masjid issue of December 6, 1992, and the Karsevaks as the Hindutva activists, wearing saffron turbans and armed with tridents, the emblem of Lord Shiva, identifying themselves as the cultural and religious icons. It features Indian classical dance exponent, Mallika Sarabhai, her cultural, traditional and classical practices, while making a reference to Rustom Bharucha's research, who traces the journey of contemporary artists to reach a secular performative mode of India.

Article Abstract:
The art and education movement by Rukmini Devi, a pioneer in the twentieth century revival of Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance is presented. Though Bharatanatyam manifests itself as a world form presently, like the Ballet, and the Dance Studies Program at Roehampton, supported by a grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB), has assumed a leadership role in providing a new, global profile, this dance form is still not on the research and curricular agendas of dance departments in the US.
