Article Abstract:
A writer contemplates death at the scene of a murder-suicide to which she has accompanied the police . The woman lies on the bed, her husband on the floor. The children, who saw the murder, have been taken away. Violence fascinates Americans, but they go back to security. They want to read about it in novels and look at it in crime dramas on television. Some people, however, feel that they can only find recognition in being mass murderers. They see such people becoming cultural icons, treated with awe and reverence in today's culture, having posters and Web sites in their honor. Then they emulate them.
