Article Abstract:
A modern dancer remembers studies with Martha Graham in the 1930s. Graham regenerated movement from the Old World into a creation replete with an American sense of power, energy and freedom. Graham presented five categories of powerful images which could energize every movement the dancers made. They were feeling, seeing, smelling, hearing and tasting. She had the dancers sit on the floor for the warmup exercises so they would develop a perfectly centered spine.
