Article Abstract:
The 'Arabian' dance also called 'Coffee' in The Nutcracker, a nineteenth-century Russian ballet, disseminates its own particular brand of 'Arabianism' in one location after another, year after year. The analysis of 'coffee' relies mainly on close readings of several 'Arabians' and a consideration of them in relation to various conceptual schemes, including Laban Movement Analysis, Orientalism aspects o feminist theory and reception theory.

The basic improvisational aesthetics that inform the practice of African-American vernacular dancing are discussed. As the different African-American communities in different geographic locations dance and communicate with each other, the meaning of the improvisational action changes.
