Article Abstract:
Robert Rauschenberg had a substantial influence on the Merce Cunningham Dance Company during his tenure there as a scenic, lighting and costume designer and stage manager between 1954 and 1964. Rauschenberg used his time with the company to expand visual arts' role on the Cunningham aesthetic and in the theater in general. His work stretched traditional boundaries between sets, properties and costumes as well as distinctions between the materials of dance and those of art. In his work with Cunningham, Rauschenberg could create art which was active, not static.
