A conversation with Maria Tallchief

Article Abstract:

Maria Tallchief actually started her professional career at Metro Goldwyn Mayer studios as a folk dancer in a Judy Garland film, 'Presenting Lily.' She nexdt danced with Agnes de Mille in 'Rodeo.' Tallchief also talks in this interview of how she met George Balanchine at the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Tallchief was taken into the Ballet Russe company partly due to the war. Some of the Russians did not feel Americans should dance classical ballet and did not make her initiation easy. After his return from the Paris Opera in 1947, Balanchine became very intent on starting a company. Morton Baum suggested the name of New York City Ballet.
