Barnard College, Columbia University, hosted the 2004 Barbara Stoler Miller Conference in New York City, on February 20-22, 2004. Called 'Contesting Pasts, Performing Futures: Nationalism, Globalization, and the Performing Arts in Modern South Asia', the conference recognized the growing scholarship in the field of South Asian Performing Arts, and provided an opportunity to the artists and scholars to discuss their most contemporary research work, to demonstrate and perform, and to get to know each other.

Davidsbundlertanze--literally "Dances of the band of David" --refers to Robert Schumann's circle of associates, both real and imagined, dedicated to advancing progressive artistic ideals and fighting the Philistines who resisted them. George Balanchine met the composer on an Olympian artistic level in staging a work of such elusive character and his innate classicism formed the perfect counterpart to Schumann's sometimes extravagant and heated expressivity.
