Article Abstract:
Four virus diseases which kill thousands in the US are described, transmission and prevention noted, and statistics cited. Hantaviruses spread by mice, three forms of viral hepatitis, influenza which infects 37 million in the US yearly, and rabies are discussed. In 1994 30,000 people were vaccinated against rabies.

About 80 million people get sick from food-borne illnesses and 9,000 die every year. The symptoms are often mistaken for something else and go untreated, which can lead to more serious health problems. There are, however, many preventative measures that can reduce the chance of becoming sick from food.

Many people with type II diabetes do not know that they have it although it can cause blindness, kidney disease and heart damage. About 16 mil Americans have it. The rate tripled from 1983 to 1995 as more baby boomers aged. Pregnancy, weight, ethnicity and family history are all factors.
