Some over-the-counter pain relievers can be harmful, even if taken in doses slightly above the recommended amount. Acetaminophen can cause liver damage, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may cause stomach problems. Combination pain relievers may contribute to kidney disease.
