USA today: The big one

Article Abstract:

The birth of the 'USA Today' on 15th September 1982 altered the fledging world of visual journalism and changed the way Americans got their news in printed form. The USA Today team set out to demonstrate that a newspaper could package news, sports and entertainment in a succinct format, bolstered by fun explanatory graphics, smart photography and clear presentation that wasted no time in getting to the point.

The Detroit News and the Detroit Free press went toe-to-toe and raised each otherEs design game and showed the way a presentation could define a paper in the market. The design rivalry blew up on July 13, 1995 when the 5 1/2-year strike by the unions against the News and Free Press marked the dispersal of an incredible concentration of talent.

Redesigns of The Times

A group of journalism students from Northwestern University were invited to redesign the front page of the New York Times to make it more appealing for the younger readers. The design and the reasons for those designs are given by the students.
