The Design Coalition for Professional Development (DCPD) is heeding Urban Land Institute's William Hudnut's advice to think big by fostering cooperation within the industry. DCPD is an association of interior design professional groups and business and industry partners who will contribute their financial resources and expertise to manage, implement and evaluate a continuing education program. The organization will be aided by the Interior Design Continuing Education Council in cataloging all continuing education tracks in the design industry.

Electrokinetics is a multidisciplinary business that is involved in the research and development up to the manufacture of cutting-edge solutions. It specializes in electronics, design, mechanical engineering and computers. Two new products are the Virtual Image Clock with four radial arms displaying motion and light at 250 RPM through the use of light-emitting diodes. Another novelty product is the motion-sensitive glass bathroom door that turns opaque when closed and projects the word "occupied" for extra protection.

Perkins & Will Interior Design Dir Gary Wheeler views three particular projects as representative of the capacity of the field of design to complement, support and enhance corporate objectives through the application of technological innovations. Wheeler opined that these clients are unusual because they recognize the value of design for their business, unlike other firms, and therefore considers such clients an exception to the rule.
