The three-pin plug

Article Abstract:

A new design of three-pin 13 amp plug, called Rotoplug, will be introduced to the market. It has been designed by Hugh Gilbert, a chartered architect, and its main feature is that it has no screws and is therefore quick to fit. The wires and pins are colour-coded and the plug slots together like a lid. The design was patented in 1990 and has passed British Standard 1363 in 1992. Gilbert encountered difficulties getting the plug to market as he could not get licenced or financing. Eventually private individuals with finance from the Business Expansion Scheme manufactured the project.

Of designers and lifeboats

Article Abstract:

A Canadian newspaper editor shares his somewhat jaundiced view of newspaper designers. According to the editor, newspaper designers have so many annoying habits that working with them on a redesign is enough to give even the most sensible editor nightmares. The editor cites their incessant babble, their tendency to dawdle and their temperamental ways as some reasons why a newspaper redesign often becomes more difficult than it should be.
