Article Abstract:
The design of Opus reflects the translation of water movement into architectural elements. The restaurant, which is located in the Water Garden in Santa Monica, CA, is surrounded by various ponds and fountains and the design serves to blend the facility with its environment. The wavy design elements are repeated intermittently from the canvas valet kiosk which heralds Opus' existence to the curved tree-lined pathway leading to the restaurant and the interior. The area's welcoming atmosphere results from the use of pearwood finishes and warm, soft hues.

Article Abstract:
James Biber, of Pentagram Architectural services, has designed a new screen wall which is aesthetically pleasing and inexpensive. It is in use in the restaurant 'One Fifth Avenue,' in New York. The screen wall is made out of common industrial materials. James Biber covered them with large cream-colored curtains hanging from the ceiling to the floor. Irregular lights, mounted on the floor between the fabric and screen, create perfect silhouettes of the panels and grids against the curtains, adding a spectacular effect to the interior of the restaurant.

A 700-sq foot space was converted by architect Michael Rubin into a quaint art and architecture bookshop for Archivia. Rubin designed floor-to-ceiling bookshelves separated by a custom-designed sales desk. The walls were simply coated with dark green paint while the parquet floor was painted black. A mezzanine was inserted at the back of the store to house the administrative offices.
