The long, the short and the tall: column widths

Article Abstract:

The selection of line widths for text columns depends on a host of other factors such as vertical spacing, type size and type face. In general, however, moderately wide lines of between 12 to 15 picas are best for standard news pages. Short lines, as a rule, are best used for listings of restaurants and movies. Longer columns, in contrast, are best employed for editorials and commentaries since they are more stable and stately. These basic principles for column widths in print newspapers are also applicable for online design.

Giambattista Bodoni and his global reign

Article Abstract:

The Bodoni font evolved as a universal typographical style for newspaper headlines. It was the 'New York Tribune' which first used Bodoni in its pages and, not long after, other newspapers adopted the style. Typographers consider Bodoni as one of the most beautiful fonts of all time due to its elegantly typed letters and the stark contrast between thin and thick strokes. Typeface designers such as Centennial and Walbaum have reinvented Bodoni by combining its aesthetic appeal with good legibility.

Go figure

Article Abstract:

Lowercase or old style number figures are generally recommended for text applications because of their perceived clarity and appeal to the reader. Uppercase numeral type faces offer less legibility than their lowercase counterparts but they are the functional choice when it comes to headlines and tables printing. Despite their admitted legibility in newspaper printing applications, lowercase numeral type faces convey the appearance of being too busy when used in headlines.
