Article Abstract:
An evaluation of the Society of Newspaper Design's awards is presented. There were 8,219 newspapers entered into the competition, of which 17 received gold awards, 85 received silver awards and 114 received bronze awards. The Miami Herald was judged to be the best of the show. Those who received gold awards included the Miami Herald, the Atlanta Journal & Constitution, El Mundo, The Daily Breeze, El Nuevo Herald, The Detroit News, Eastsideweek, The New York Times, El Pais Semanal and Orange County Register.

Samples are presented of the best pages submitted by Design magazine by editors and designers of newspapers with circulations of 10,000 and under. Contributing newspapers include The Tribune of New Albany, IN; The Daily Northwestern of Evanston, IL; Arrasate Press of Gipuzkoa, Spain; Clovis Journal of Clovis, NM; The Journal of Alexandria, VA; N'West Iowa Review of Sheldon, IA; and The News-Record of Gillette, WY.

Article Abstract:
The newspaper 'Scotland on Sunday' that has won 50 major industry awards for six consecutive years including a gold award from the Society of Newspaper Design has won a top British award in 1996 for its photographs. The Kodak Award was significant for the newspaper because the role of their photographs which they believe are integral part of how articles are conceived and written are recognized.
