The best student design of the year

Article Abstract:

Entries to the 1997 College Newspaper Design Contest reflect the strong potential of undergraduate designers. Many newspaper officials have remarked that they are impressed by student work and could even be convinced to hire students on the spot. Although the entries reflect colleges' more sophisticated approach to training designers, they are also mostly reliant on decoration rather than content.

The rise of modularity: It's hip to be square

Article Abstract:

The daily Christian Science Monitor a broadsheet redesigned in 1965 offered six wise columns, as opposed to the standard narrow eight columns and was modular. The rationale for a modular layout is that readers prefer the organization and lack of clutter that modules provide and modules show relationships among stories, pictures and graphics.

Currie, Kane at the front of their class

Article Abstract:

University of Texas (Arlington) student Michael Currie and Swarthmore College student Justin Kane won the Designer of the Year awards in the 2001 College Design Contest.
