The Rhine stuff

Article Abstract:

The exhibits at Germany's Cologne Furniture Fair held in Jan 1992 reflected the general lack of imaginative design in German domestic furniture and the innovative ideas of Scandinavian designers. Scandinavian exhibits included a stacking chair from Peter Karpf as well as Alfred Homann's Ensemble chair, the most significant chair amongst the relatively few new products launched at the fair. The look of Italian-manufactured furniture is becoming more trans-European while Spanish furniture design has lost some of its originality. Exhibits from French and British designers are also discussed.

Breaking the Mould

Article Abstract:

Tupperware, a plastic container manufacturer which markets its products through private parties in individuals' homes, plans to relaunch itself in the UK. It has developed a new range of baby feeding equipment, called Tuppercare, designed by FM Design in London. It is targeting its products at the new generation of mothers, who tend to regard the Tupperware party selling method as a joke. Tupperware is therefore aiming to deliver demonstrations at the workplace during lunch hours and at ante-natal classes.

Review; Michael Evamy on the Paris Furniture Fair

Article Abstract:

The urgent need for new French talent in furniture design was highlighted at the Jan 1992 Paris Furniture Fair where one of the few exciting exhibits, the Tutti Frutti chair, was by an established designer, Pascal Mourgue. The VIA agency set up by the French government is now having to match French manufacturers with foreign designers. While the 'Rangement Etoile' interlocking shelf and drawer unit from Martine Harle offered hope for the future, real invention was sadly lacking.
