The University of North Carolina, Greensboro's previous Honors Studios programs have produced innovative prototype designs from its students. The program involves guest faculty teams who advise student teams in a company-sponsored design project. The latest program was sponsored by Thomasville Furniture Industries who required an in-depth study on the future of the furniture industry. The resulting prototypes reflected the industry's focus on the entrepreneurial worker, globalcommunications and the senior members of society.

Bernhardt Furniture Company Inc commissioned Michael Vanderbyl to assist in directing the company's growth. Vanderbyl enhanced the company's strength in wood products manufacturing by introducing more contemporary designs. Vanderbyl designed everything from graphics to the furniture trucks. He also took charge of commissioning leading architects to design new furniture lines for the company. Bernhardt's sales hasgrown from $5 million to $30 million in five years.

Furniture manufacturer Keilhauer contracted designer Michael Vanderbyl to create its showroom design for the Chicago Merchandise Mart. Vnaderbyl used a curving scrim wall to create a dramatic border for the area while allowing hints of activity within to filter through. A new logo was superimposed on the scrim. The interiors featured contemporary presentations ofchair collections bathed in yellow light and mounted on cantilevered wall shelving.
