Article Abstract:
Christopher Nell, manager of environmental design at London Underground, has asked Ross Ludgrove, an industrial designer, to redesign some underground tube stations. Of stations, 140 are due to be redecorated. Ludgrove suggests that the existing structure is enclosed in a buble of glass. Colour and lighting at the side of the tunnel could be used to give the impression that daylight is not far away. At the entrance of the Tunnel where trains emerge, he plans to put a steel iris. This will serve both to conserve the rush of air as the train approaches so that it can be filtered and control the flow of air, thus avoiding fuelling flames should a fire occur.

Article Abstract:
The environmental aspects of graphic design were discussed by the world's leading graphic designers at a special conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, running parallel with the 1992 Earth Summit. Thirty international designers were invited to design posters and discuss the link between the environment and graphic design. The conference was dominated by four speakers, Chas Maviyane-Davies from Zimbabwe, the UK's Neville Brody, Pierre Bernard of France and Brazil's Rafic Farah, who attempted to create a debate regarding the role of the designer in the fragile ecosystem, but had little success.

Article Abstract:
Design and architecture in London have become key concerns both for residents and politicians, even though the city is no longer the centre of the world design industry. Design work in London is standing up reasonably well to the recession, however, and London-based design companies have the potential to compete well in Europe. The key issues for the future of the design industry in the city are how it comes across to its residents, the attitude of foreign customers to London design consultants and the impact of new transport on the city's infrastructure.
