Reinventing R & D

Article Abstract:

Contract furniture manufacturers see the need to revitalize their research and development (R and D) programs to get ahead in the industry. This entails forming collaborations with other industry sectors, reducing product developing cycles and forming multifunctional R and D teams. This would also involve the incorporation of the environmental and ergonomic concerns in furniture designs and an analysis of product pricing. An upgraded and effective R and D program will not only help individual companies but will also benefit the contract furniture industry as well.

Tricking the eye

Article Abstract:

Design firm Manifesto Inc's Resolute Division introduced its Paper Light Collection. The collection consists of durable light diffusers made from man-made petroleum fibers called aramid, that mimic the look of parchment paper. The collection is rendered in 14 different designs. The aramid fiber, is highly heat resistant, less flammable than paper and can be cleaned easily. The diffusers provide a soft, warm glow and can be sued with 60 to 75-watt light bulbs.

A new point of view

Article Abstract:

Schumacher's new '3x5' textile collection gave opportunities to textile designers for creating new fashions to suit market demand. Arthur Sager, vice-president and Schumacher's senior partner, and Kristie Strasen, a textile consultant, gave the contract to three designers to submit five designs, thus giving the collection the name of '3x5.' Strasen economically integrated the 15 designs with a crepe and textured weave in different colors.
