Redesign? Redefine!

Article Abstract:

Newspaper publishers are advised to reconsider their goals before undertaking a redesign of their publications since a redesign is not always the best solution for flagging circulation. They should consider factors such as editorial philosophy, relevance to the community and content. Afterwards, they should plan how the content should be distributed in the pages and create a design that reflects the publication's goal.

Ed Arnold, the 86 year old father of the newspaper design, was honored by SND at its Minneapolis workshop with a Lifetime Achievement Award for the outstanding contributions to the newspaper design and graphics worldwide. He gives his views about the trade, experiences and the hope for the future.
