Quiet compassion: a comforting refuge for terminally ill AIDS patients

Article Abstract:

The compassionate design of the Bailey-Boushay House, a care home for SeattleAIDS patients was achieved through extensive research on requirements of these patients and community reaction to the presence of these patients. The three-story stucco building houses a day-care center for non-resident patients on the ground floor and a 35 single rooms separated into four neighborhoods by nurses stations on the second and third levels. The works of 30 artists were built into the workspaces and living areas. The designers maintained medically sterile areas by using stain-resistant materials with contemporary designs.

The Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers successfully integrates human-scale public spaces in a large 1,200 room convention hotel. The developers consulted with interior designers early in the planning stage, which assisted in detail planning and overall functionality. The hotel has a separate entrances for hotel guests and exhibition center visitors, which allows designers to create a strong visual impact for the hotel lobby. The hotel's 40,000 square foot ballroom can be rearranged into up to ten smaller meeting spaces.
