Article Abstract:
The Napa Valley facilities of the Opus One winery is buried in the crater of a 300 ft radial berm. The building, which houses the winemaking operations of Robert Mondavi and Philippede Rothschild, reflects the merging of France and California as well as the blending of Wappo Hill and Mouton. The building is designed to be spatially luxurious. The layout is designed around a huge courtyard and is defined by a terrace which provides a 360 degree view of Napa Valley. A winding staircase inspired by the barrel pattern leads to the dark and cool winemaking basement.

The Health Park Medical Center in Fort Myers, FL, created a Walt Disney type atmosphere in the children's health care institution with the clever application of lighting techniques. This effect wasenhanced with the use of warm-toned rooms and custom carpets for the hallway and colored graphics accent for the tile floors. Interior lighting was kept at a level of one watt per square foot with the use of cold cathode lighting with a life span of eight to 10 years. Bat-wing reflectors were also added to redirect lights away from patients' beds.

Architect Hanno Weber designed the Leesburg, VA, Municipal Government Center to blend in with historic surroundings and take maximum advantage of available lighting sources. He has succeeded in creating a unobtrusive and energy efficient lighting system that uses mostly indirect fluorescent fixtures. Offices were situated in the design to use as much natural light as possible reducing the electrical lighting load significantly. The building consumes .6 watts per square foot, which is below the targeted goal of .75 watts per square foot.
