Out of the woods

Article Abstract:

Finnish designers' future is with high technology industries such as chemical, engineering and electronics. Its largest design company, E&D, is in a good position to exploit this area of the market as it has already grown due to investment in computer aided design and production of custom made modernist offices. Nokia and Finlux, manufacturers of consumer electronics goods own shares in E&D, so it is already producing designs for these. Environmental issues influence Finnish design are also becoming increasingly important.

City lights

Article Abstract:

An ambitious lighting plan for the city of Edinburgh, UK, is detailed in an innovative 70-page report by consultants Lighting Design Partnership (LDP) and Morris and Steedman, architects. Designed to provide local mood lighting as well as illuminate the city's major landmarks, the plan uses a variety of lighting forms appropriate to the architecture of the area to be lit. LDP favours a gentle approach to the floodlighting of prominent buildings and maximum levels of brightness for urban lighting are recommended.

The design of football kits has become much more elaborate, which was brought about by the award by Don Revie of a contract to Admiral to produce a new strip for the England football team. Now there is a lot of money to be made for strip manufacturers such as Umbro, as teams change their strips with greater frequency. The use of strips for spectator wear has also increased and football shirts are also bought by non-team supporters as a fashion accessory.
