Article Abstract:
Newspaper publishers should not miss the opportunities presented by online newspapers. However, they have to contend with the three basic issues of information, navigation and technology to create effective online newspapers. The issue of content or information is of prime importance because it is what makes a newspaper unique. The issue of navigation is also essential because browsing in print is still easier than on the Web. Technology is also important because quality technology can enhance even mediocre content.

Vintage pages from the Chicago Tribune are compiled in an exhibit called 'The Art of the Message.' The exhibit, prepared by historian Janet Ginsburg, features the newspaper of the 1920s and 1930s. It can be seen from the photos, illustrations, detailed maps and charts and well-planned layouts of this era that newspapers were yet starting to discover the possibilities offered by the medium. Most of the exhibit materials were printed on the rotagravure presses of the Chicago Tribune.
