Article Abstract:
Teknion received the Grand Award in the second annual Neocon International Interior Design (IIDA) Showroom Competition sponsored by IIDA and Merchandise Mart Properties. The recipients of the Creative Excellence Awards were Cleator, Steelcase, Haworth, Vecta, Thomas Job, and JM Lynne. The executive officers of IIDA comprised the 1997 jury. Judging was based on the design concept, originality, visual impact and effective use of materials and space.

Scala's Bistro, located at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, San Francisco, CA, received the Best Restaurant award from Interiors magazine. The 160-seat European-style cafe and restaurant was refurbished by Backen Arrigoni and Ross. Some decoration and period detail are part of the original hotel built in 1928. An ambience of casual elegance is created by the plaster work, mahogany paneling, light fixtures and artwork found above the ceiling.

Article Abstract:
3 Arts Entertainment received the best Small Office award from Interiors magazine. The construction of the office was handled by AREA. AREA created an environment reflecting 3 Art's solid yet free-wheeling business style. Sections of concrete ceilings in public areas were exposed to provide a sense of height and drama in the building. The carpet, upholstery and millwork throughout the office are emblazoned by 3 Arts' logo.
