Novacor Division of Baxter Healthcare has developed a new compact, portable heart support system for patients awaiting transplants. The system comprises an external microprocessor control unit, an implanted pump, a battery pack and a reserve pack. Both batteries cannot be simultaneously unplugged. The units are harnessed around the waist, improving the patient's circulation and offering higher survival rates as the patient remains mobile. The system will probably not fully enter the market for two years. Plans are also under way for a fully implantable permanent assist system driven by external power packs designed to replace heart transplants.

Miles Carter UK is an office furniture design company established by Miles Carter who crafted the furniture himself and paid little attention to business strategy. In 1990, Michael Clark was appointed as managing director and commercialised the company, and Miles Carter left. The design work is now done by Ron Carter and is based on the original policy of furniture which is functional, individual and restrained in character. Miles Carter has been offered his position back, but will not accept unless he is awarded sole authority for design. He has the power to withdraw the licence to manufacture his designs.

There are fears for the future of the British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) Graphic Design Department, since the government allowed producers to use independent companies for production design. The department may not survive the competition, as it is not accustomed to marketing and is impeded by bureaucracy and financial restrictions. The department has produced some creative ideas, however, and it is worth preserving. Penetration of the market by independent graphic designers may be characterised by cheap and fast pitches which lack creativity.
