Ikea's pet Pelikan

Article Abstract:

Pelikan Design, based in Copenhagen, Denmark, is the designer of the Ikea product range. Niels Gammelgaard, a partner of Pelikan, started doing work for Ikea in 1975 along with other designers and has now been given the opportunity to operate a design studio for Ikea within his own company. Ikea is no longer Swedish-owned, but the parent company is a Dutch charitable foundation established by Ingvar Kamprad and his family. Kamprad has also acquired Habitat, but it is not yet known whether Pelikan will extend its design services to the company.

Article Abstract:

The German federal government plans to turn the old Bauhaus building in Dessau into a design college. Disused for years, there is doubt that the building, which is a monument to the art movement, will lend itself to modern design teaching. There will be pressure on the new institution to live up to the work of the original Bauhaus. The design college will concentrate on ecological solutions in environmental and urban design.

Article Abstract:

The 'new wave' furniture manufacturers in Germany and the UK are similar, as was demonstrated at the Cologne Furniture Fair. The markets in the two countries are very different, however, as in Germany small, independent furniture retailers account for 72% of the market, but are almost absent in the UK. Italy is the largest exporter of furniture to Germany, and Polish exports have risen the fastest.
