The merged companies of Stecker, LaBau Arneil McManus (S/L/A/M) and Russell Gibson Dohlen formed the Connecticut-based S/L/A/M Collaborative. Their latest venture was a combination restoration/construction of New Britain, Connecticut's Hospital for Special Care. The main idea was to incorporate high-tech into a comfortable, non-threatening environment for patients of all ages. The patient rooms, the recreation room for children, the non-denominational chapel, the physical therapy gym and balcony lounge were all designed to suit multifarious tastes.

Henningson, Durham and Richardson was hired to design several hospitals for the Mexican government. A women's hospital, Centro Medico de la Mujer Hospital Los Angeles, was the first to be built. The hospital was designed to cater to women of upper income levels who expected high standards of maternal care, thus, patient rooms were provided with luxurious settings and furnishings. The hospital features vaulted brick ceilings, limestone cladding or marble for the walls and carpeting for patient rooms.

Architectural/engineering firm Smith, Hinchman & Grylls Associates worked on the new 504-bed Veterans Administration Hospital in downtown Detroit, MI. The 1.2-million-sq-ft, three-structured building complex is faced in glazed brick and porcelain enamel. Interstitial service floors are situated in each building to allow for future flexibility. The large, skylit atrium provides a sociable place for staff, patients and visitors.
