Article Abstract:
Street newspaper movement, also known as 'wholesale' papers to homeless hawkers, emerged in the late 1980's, as homelessness became an increasing troubling problem in the US. Accordingly, Street Sense came into force which is a single room production, editorial and distribution center at Washington D.C. that began as a grassroots efforts to employ the economic causalities of what had otherwise been prosperous times.

The transformative outlook of Chicago Reader from 1970s, 80s and 90s, which is one of the oldest and most successful of the alternative weeklies, founded in 1971, is described. The four sections, which had evolved somewhat differing styles, were made more consistent and coherent, and each of the four sections offers a variety of content, stories and listings.
