Article Abstract:
The design firm Jain Malkin executed the layout and interiors of the Maternal/Infant Pavilion in the Community Hospital of Chula Vista. The layout subscribed to a single room plan for the Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum procedures to eliminate the need to move the mother from one room to another and to promote bonding between mother and child. The unit also included a strategically located neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and nursery for babies which may require observation. The NICU and nursery incorporated diurnallighting in a quiet setting, believed to promote the brain development in infants.

Article Abstract:
The architectural firm of Buck, Smith & McAvoy in collaboration with the design firms Service Solutions and Charles Spada Interiors developed and implemented the plan for the Kirk Scharfenberg House, aprototype home for children afflicted with AIDS. The home will provide short-term care to 20 children which will be handled by volunteer workers. The house itself is Victorian-inspired with a gabled roof to enhance the residential look. The facility is equipped with spaces for emergency care, physical and play therapy, family counselling services and day care.

Rivington House Health Care Facility in New York, NY, is the largest AIDS treatment center in the state. The center's former rooftop gym has been converted into a penthouse for occupational, physical and speech therapies and hairdressing. Each residential floor has its own whirlpool and dining, lounge and recreational spaces. There is a cafeteria at the lower level and nursing stations, built low, serve as a meeting places for residents and staff.
