End games

Article Abstract:

The McCullough Student Center of Middlebury College in Vermont successfully integrates two disparate buildings into one center. Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Assoc adopted their middleground approach and effectively balanced traditional design and individual expression. They achieved this by adding two octagonal pavilions andtwo auxiliary ones at each side of the original 1912 gym. These served to conceal the gym's connection with the pool building and unify the whole structure. The interior takes advantage of the outdoor views and allows for ventilation and natural lighting.
