Frank Lloyd Wright and Russia

Article Abstract:

Frank Lloyd Wright was interested in the new political system of social democracy that Russia was in the process of establishing in 1933. He believed that democracy was inspired by nature, and that architecture should be organic. He felt that architecture should reflect social values, and in his letters to the Russian paper 'Izvestia' he requested Russians to include human values in their architecture. Wright was soon disillusioned with the Russian political system, and despaired of his vision of an ideal society being realized.

Facing an issue

Article Abstract:

A recent conference of design faculty in Mar 1993 addressed the issues of socially responsible design and called for changes in social and political policies. The conference was sponsored by the Pratt Institute's Center for Advanced Design Research and challenged many doctrines and attitudes of the prevailing design profession. The conference developed a 300 word definition of the term, which includes observing differences, distributing power equally and encouraging democracy.
