Article Abstract:
The International Design Prize introduced in 1991 formed part of the efforts of Erwin Teufel, prime minister of the Baden-Wurttemberg region of Germany, to establish a design identity for locally-manufactured products. Numerous German companies that recognise the importance of design in gaining a competitive advantage are based in Baden-Wurttemberg which has a reputation for good design. Dakota Jackson designs and makes innovative, challenging furniture at a profit and aims to install his own production manager in a company with a $3 million turnover via a $1 million contract. Jackson's organisation is production management intensive and more flexible by being smaller. His first products were luxury one-off items, and Jackson's products remain slick, despite his claim that there is an element of awkwardness in his works.
