The recession in the 1990s has promoted a shortage of professionals in interior design firms. Companies have several options on how to recruit and nurture employees. Firms can bring accelerate junior staff to intermediate levels and enroll them in training programs and seminars to determine their commitment to the profession. Companies can also establish a relationship with design schools which have internship programs to find able students who can be turned into new hires in the future.

The design for the Christopher Columbus Center for Marine Research and Exploration was rendered by Toronto-based Zeidler Roberts Partnership. The research center, which is expected to be completed by 1994, will enhance the attractions of Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The $160 million project will include facilities for laboratory research, public training facility and commercial spaces.
