Creativity: it's all about using your brain

Article Abstract:

News design has evolved to become as important as the text it supports. Readers generally think using two hemispheres of their brain, the left and the right hemisphere. The left side is the logical side that functions to interpret information in a logical manner, therefore can be controlled to a certain degree. The right side is the creative side and is usually illogical, therefore, uncontrollable. Informational graphics are a hybrid mixture of pictures and word intended to stimulate both hemispheres of the brain to direct the flow of information.

Europe is now the leader

Article Abstract:

The Society of Newspaper Design workshop held in Barcelona, Spain, in 1995 proved that Europe has become the leader in newspaper design and people have lost interest in designs from US newspapers. Although young talents in newspaper design in the US continue to present beautiful layouts, their explanations on the designs give limited value. However, American David Carson was applauded during the workshop.

The author describes his attendance at his first Society for News Design conference. He felt the most significant elements were the variety of topics in the program, the concluding party where prizes were awarded, and the opportunity to meet publication staff.
