Beyond the visual: designing for all the senses

Article Abstract:

Architectural designs in Japan and Finland reflect both countries' close relationship with nature and appeal to senses other than the visual. In Japan, for instance, the rough boards of a sauna and fragrance of steam and wood bring to mind forests and hot springs while modern homes often have a tatami room where one walks on stockinged feet. In Finland, the glass vases of designer Alvar Aalto call to mind rippling Finnish lakes while his bent plywood chairs invite one's touch.
