Interior design firm Hellmut, Obata and Kassabaum Inc was commissioned to rebuild Kuwait's war-ravaged National Assembly Building. The National Assembly Hall, where Kuwait's government delegates meet and discuss national policies, integrated Islamic motifs and modern lines. The delegates' desks were arranged in semicircular tiers with sleek veneer and leather writing surfaces. The top edges of the desks have a series of Islamic stars in satin brass and nickel silver while being equipped with electronic voting systems, microphones and electrical wiring for simultaneous translations.

The Japanese-inspired office of sportswear manufacturer Mackinaw Corp in New York was designed by Mark Randall of the Philadelphia-based AREA Interior Designs. Randall reduced design costs by utilizing low-cost materials such as the shoji or Japanese screen. This elementpervades the entire showroom and office design, with eight ft high panels serving as partitions to create private enclosures while letting the daylight in. Metal halide lamps were used to enhance product features in the showrooms. In addition, furniture pieces were reused to trim costs further.

AREA Interior Design's partner Mark Randall was commissioned by Philadelphia-based Mackinaw Corp to design the kitchen and bathroom amenities of its New York sales office.Randall created a garden shed between the front showrooms and the staff officesat the back. The design incorporated galvanized steel sheets laminated to a gypsum board. Sliding doors were used to minimize space use.
