Back to the future: What one document from 1980 can tell us about how we make newspapers today

Article Abstract:

A mysterious document, probably of the 1980s, containing information about pagination specifications for newspapers is studied to see whether the functions mentioned there are accurate or not and if yes, to what extent. As per the document, page makeup and copy editing are two tasks that can be performed by one individual and it is found that the requirements laid out in the 1980s describe the way many newspapers work in the present day and the predictions made are very accurate, however, the ease of use described in it has taken over twenty years to materialize.

A list of papers whose front page of December 24 2004 that appeared on the newseum.orgsite is presented. Some of the common factors are one-line black serif centered masthead, horizontal promotions stripped directly above or below the masthead and between four and five stories are displayed.
