Article Abstract:
Miles Carter UK is an office furniture design company established by Miles Carter who crafted the furniture himself and paid little attention to business strategy. In 1990, Michael Clark was appointed as managing director and commercialised the company, and Miles Carter left. The design work is now done by Ron Carter and is based on the original policy of furniture which is functional, individual and restrained in character. Miles Carter has been offered his position back, but will not accept unless he is awarded sole authority for design. He has the power to withdraw the licence to manufacture his designs.

Rexite, Italian office accessories manufactuer has turnover of about 4 million pounds sterling, with 50% coming from exports, mostly to the US, Japan and Germany. Its classic Cribbio range forms the basis of its sales but the company realises that relying on proven successful products will not sustain business. It has therefore collaborated with UK designer Julian Brown to develop a serious small desk clock, which led to range of alarm clocks made from injection moulded plastic, in sombre Rexite colours, bright colours and translucent colours.

GFC Lighting is a small lighting company with many large clients such as DEGW, Rolfe Judd, Cecil Denny Highton and Broadway Malyan. The company is run from an old Marmite factory in Vauxall, London, and was originally intended to sell furniture. Sue Cartlidge, the founder, claims that many clients perceive the company as a large one due to the quantity of advertising it undertakes. Many designers are loath to visit the showroom because they underrate it due to the venue.
