Article Abstract:
The single market of 1993 offers the opportunity to expand in Europe. By using design consultancies to improve innovation, the UK should try to address its trade deficit problem, which is now almost 1 billion pounds sterling per month. Germany's economy is in recession, but despite this the UK is in a good position since the pound sterling has been devalued and it has cultivated a range of good performing industries. Many companies demand that before a design consultant is used, returns must be quantified so consultancies must find methods of measuring effectiveness.

Thrislingon, which produces cubicles for toilets, showers and changing rooms, recruited a design consultant, David Goodwin of Gooodwin Emck to design a better, upmarket product. The result was Datum, which is a cubicle in which the door fits into the frame, rather than overlapping it as in conventional designs. Thrislington decided to move upmarket when a Belgian client turned down the existing product.

Article Abstract:
There are many UK design consultancies practicing abroad, particlularly in eastern Germany. British designers have a good reputation abroad and are more creative than their German counterparts, who tend to be engineering and technology orientated. UK consultancies may find that they can do their best work abroad, particularly in Germany, as its companies are less cost consious and more adventurous.
