A lack of hard currency plagued colonial America in the 1600s. European coins made their way to the country through port cities, augmenting the disorganized colonial monetary system, and continued to circulate until the 1850s. In Jul. 1861, Congress authorized the first legal paper tender.

Historic buildings found along the route from Knoxville in the east, south to Chattanooga and then northwest to Nashville, TN, are described. Among these are the James White Fort, Armstrong-Lockett House, Marble Springs and Ramsey House.
