A proposal of the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to expand its facilities has led to the construction of National Archives II in College Park, MD. The 1.7 million sq ft, six-story facility is located on 33 acres of the college campus. It will house research facilities, offices, an exercise facility and the cafeteria. The archive section will be fitted with compactors, which are high-density mobile shelves, set on carriages for greater flexibility. The facility will also be fitted with state-of-art security systems.

Former fashion designer Claudine Blackwell has ventured into the furniture design market with her collection of bent steel rod furniture spiced up with colorful upholstery. The furniture line features expressive flourishes, inspired with neo-romantic touches. The line includes a sofa sitting on curled legs, a Harper desk, a Madagascar dining table, standing lamps, occasional chairs and mirrors. The curls and assymetrical shapes of the bent steel portion are achieved by cold bending or applying an oxyacetylene torch.

Electronics manufacturer Meridian Corp has upgraded its Electronic File System which is used for organizing and storing confidential documents. The previous model was operated with a hand-held programming unit which allowed the operator to key in a code to access a file. The improved system can now be linked with a computer, thus enabling the file base to be programmed into the computer for more efficient management. The new system provides greater security for highly confidential documents.
