Article Abstract:
An analysis of possible reasons behind the Spanish newspaper El Mundo winning more awards for newspaper designing and typography than any other newspaper in the world shows that the secret lies in cut-throat competition and a thoroughly professional approach by the newspaper designer. The Spanish tabloids and people involved in their production are presented in alphabetical order to provide better understanding of the competition for newspaper publishers in Spain.

The Grand Island Independent, a daily newspaper of Nebraska, is famous for its production, text, text type, page layouts and photography. However, a further change could increase its quality and production by using Franklin Gothic, Eras or Gill Sans for its headline face, by introducing different typeface for sigs and section masts, by reducing the number of boxes and rules on the opinion page and by using good looking sports action photo on sport pages.

Legibility is a technical attribute of letter forms or typefaces that serves to describe the level of recognition of an individual letter and its degree of differentiation from other letters, while readability is much more subjective that serves to describe the aesthetic appearance, acceptance or rejection of that appearance. It is necessary to use types which express the qualities than types which reflect information design.
