The Washington, D.C.-based National Society Daughters of American Revolution Library is one of the country's best genealogical libraries. It houses a specialized collection of American genealogical and historical documents and manuscripts including 140,000 volumes and 250,000 research files.

A history of heraldry

Article Abstract:

Heraldry spread throughout Europe between 1130 ad 1160 A.D. Knights wearing their armor were distinguished during warfare by the markings on their shields. Seals which featured a man's rank and personal emblems were also used to authenticate documents.
