Women ministers often have a keen a grasp of the power of the personal narrative within their sermons and skillfully employ their personal experiences and storytelling gifts in communications with the church community. A Columbia, Missouri minister's use of personal narratives involves congregation members in discussions of contemporary issues. Her sermons take on a familiar story-telling pattern and offer an almost poetic form of communication.

Narrative performance of erotic tales in premodern Sweden exemplifies the cultural construction of gender. Folkloristic interest in collections of erotica became popularized at the end of the 19th century.
